Primary pupils visit sixth form mentors

AN outreach programme of religious education drew to a close last week as primary school pupils visited their mentors at St George's College.

Children from St Charles Borromeo Catholic Primary School in Weybridge, St Anne's Catholic Primary in Chertsey, Holy Family Catholic Primary in Addlestone and St George's Junior School in Weybridge attended a mass at the college in Weybridge Road, Addlestone, last Thursday.

Sixth form students have been visiting the schools in the past term to teach RE to pupils as part of a scheme that has been running for more than 20 years.

The sixth-formers joined the children in the mass, singing and learning actions to songs the teenage students had composed.

Reception pupils sang songs and others read prayers they had written for the event.

All of the work produced by the children was put on display in the college chapel.

Pat George, the teacher at St George's who developed the programme, said: "RE in the primary school is an experience which links the college with the wider community and provides for a faith-based interchange between students coming to the end of their school years and those just beginning.

"The six-week teaching programme culminates in a service of thanksgiving held in the St George's College chapel.

"This service, and the sixth form involvement with our excellent host schools, we feel, is an inspiring example of how local schools can work together to provide a meaningful faith experience for their students," she said.
